A new obsession

Some called my Step Father a pack rat, I called him a collector. Either way when he passed away 2 years ago I was left in care of his estate which included several sealed boxes. At the time I was overwhelmed with tragedy and caring for 3 babies. So the boxes where placed into storage where they sat, until 2 months ago. While going through the unit in search of family pictures I rediscovered them. Underneath yearbooks and personal papers was a an old stationary box, filled with letters. I began opening each letter, looking for dates and familiar names. The letters were written by 3 men between 1921-1935, all proclaiming everlasting love to my Grandmother, Gladys. What a perfect box to hold letters of such passion! Some were typed, some handwritten with the most remarkable penmanship.

There are quite a few poems.

Lot's of pet names.

My Grandmother did social work before she retired to raise her children. Many letters are from the Red Cross during war times.

She was also a journalist.

And scads of telegrams. Telegrams must have been the 'texting' of that time. Some are short, just information like what time their train was due to arrive. Some more romantic in nature.

Some are really funny, check out the detailed map. Or the one below telling her about a movie.
Little interesting and silly clippings were in some.
I didn't know my Grandmother, she died in the early 70's before my parents married. But I know that none of these men were my Grandfather. The mystery deepened when I discovered one of the men would later become her husband. I am trying to sort the letters by date so I can put the pieces together. What happened to these men she cared so much for. What happened to the first husband? So far I haven't found any letters from my Grandfather! Weird. It's like a Hallmark movie or something.
Daughter finds old box of letters.
Daughter sits in dusty attic reading the letters.
Daughter discovers dark family secret....
I know by the hotel stationary that these men traveled quite a bit. The engraved letterhead is Amazing!! I buy old sheet music every chance I get just for fonts and engraving like this.

I've been lucky enough to stay at the Monteleone in New Orleans, it's a beautiful hotel. Still looks just like this.

I love this one! Sweet Hotels, sleep in comfort and safety.

Here was the object of their affection, wasn't she beautiful?

Halloween's past

Well it's the week before Halloween and the spirits in our House can hardly stand it. We have 'The Great Pumpkin' Tevo'd, candy corn is now referred to as 'dessert' and the boys sleep with their wigs (that's another post). We've celebrated 3 wonderful Halloween's as a family, the first was sadly spent apart in the NICU. I wanted to share some of my favorite memories.
An exhausted trio of tricksters! Last year the boys were bees, and Lily was a kitty, this is the aftermath of a great night.
These were taken at our neighborhood pumpkin patch when the kids were 2. Philip in the maze, this year he was almost to the top!

Lily found hers.

Philip is not too sure about what he just put his hand in.
Sticking your tounge
out provides the boost of power you need for a heavy haul.

Back when the kids were babies we had to color code them because no one could tell them apart. Orange for Owen just stuck.
Our first real Halloween I dressed the babies up as bluebirds. Anyone who knows me well knows I am obsessed with birds of all types. I found the pattern in an old Martha Stewart Baby mag. My Mother and I spent weeks making these cute costumes. They were not easy, and multiply that by 3, it was all worth it though. Kevin transformed our triplet stroller into a tree and nest. We had such fun wheeling them through the neighborhood, they were a hit!

Fluffing the nest.

Lily-bird.

Owen-bird.
Philip-bird.

Passing out candy was their favorite part.

Thank you for going down memory lane with me. I cannot believe how fast the years go by. I have to go spray paint Owen's wig now.

Sunny day & good friends!

Well I guess I'm a seasoned pro now that I finished my 2nd show. I am exhausted, again I am in awe of the folks who participate in the 'biggies'. How they get a weeks worth of stuff together, haul it, camp for a week, play nice with others & break it down is beyond me. This show consumed me for a month, but it was worth it. In the end we had a beautiful sunny day spent with good friends and made some cash to boot!
I was happy with the way my tent turned out, lots of white and lovely blues. That container holding the hydrangeas is an old humidifier, I have a dozen all different.
In the left corner of this pic is my new pal Maggie from The Veranda. She had a lot of good Round Top stories to share, like selling a box of ballet slippers to Robin of Magnolia Pearl fame, who used them to dress her tent. I posted a picture of them here.
I think this cabinet turned out well. It didn't sell, but it's in my booth now & will look great decorated for our Christmas open house.
I sold this chair to one of my regular customers. The hutch I did with the turquoise handles were the first to go, and my little kitchen table & chairs sold last as I was breaking down. Love that- I didn't have to haul it home.
My Art Diva's! This is the most awesome group of ladies, such good & supportive friends. I love them all. Joann, a long time dealer, Charlene from My Hearts Ease, Carolyn of Then & Now and Pat from My Tattered Elegance.
Joanna from Sweet Finds joined the fun this time along with her partner Angela of Filigree Moon. We always find something to talk about, she is also a Mother of multiples- and look how good she looks! They had a great booth, I bought a couple of goodies there.

Our hostess and ring leader Jana, she did a great job organizing as usual.

My sweet, sweet Carolyn. She's my neighbor at Collected Treasues and she made the most AMAZING Christmas cottages. They came in 2 sizes and lots of pretty colors, the big ones were only $40! All wrapped up and ready to give to someone special. I think she is going to show each one up close on her blog, Then & Now.
Jana's adorable quilted pumpkins, what a deal!
I spent some serious downtime recovering yesterday, but the factory is back open and in full Halloween mode. I have 3 trick or treaters in need of some costume help, so once again I'm off to my home away from home -JoAnns!

Sneak Peek for Saturday

Okay, it's the day before Collected Treasures Trade Days and I'm still distressing and staining. I ended up catching a cold from my darling children. So with achy bones and sore throat I'm in the garage sanding away up until the last minute. I really wanted to show you what I've been
working on, hopefully luring you to our sale. I didn't get the glass back in the cabinet doors yet, and the cute table is still being stained but this will give you an idea.
I saved those antique robins egg handles for just the right project, and this was it. I have 4 cottage chairs and used 2 different Cath Kidston patterns. Both have the same robins egg color. Are you seeing a theme here?
Cute little patchwork footstool and a covered dish. I love making these dishes, people really like them. And the adorable pint sized floral chair has been sitting in my collection for too long.
Stacks of great pillows to go on the bed that isn't ready. Oh, so much to finish tomorrow. I don't know how you guys who do the 'big' shows do it. I am burned out!!!!!!!!!!!!
Long on tables this time. Chippy, rusty and white.
I made a couple of EAT signs for match the hutch, table and chairs. One is vintagey...
The other is more mod.

I did not stray from my black and neutrals. I have 6 suitcase and a child's humpback trunk(not pictured). I stenciled the numbers on the seats myself.
I love this chair, I used a darker stain to tone it down and the fabric is great.
The funky manni will hold some mixed media supplies I have for sale, and she will also be wearing a price tag.

I couldn't leave out the white. White baby slips, little white jugs, buttons galore (the good kind too), I think I'll have enough White Wednesday pics for a month.
I've been collecting salt & pepper shakers to fill with German glass glitter since I saw it in Stampington last year.
I'm sure I will have some leftover for our Christmas Open House.
Don't know how this slipped in here but check out the dishes, don't you love that pattern?
Pretty little nest of tiny white jugs sitting atop white plates.

White slips, buttons and plates. Pretty.
This is a child's Fire King cup and saucer I filled with white buttons, what a beautiful presentation that would be as a gift.

My friends have been busy too. Here are a few of
Jana's projects, check out her blog Collected Treasures to see more.

And my sweet friend Carolyn has been knee deep in glitter for a month making these amazing Christmas cottages. She will also be selling her one of a kind pillows and other goodies. Check her out at Then and Now to see more of what she's been doing.
We have 30 dealers in all, really good stuff. No socks, sunglasses or travel size toiletries! Also check out Charlene at My Hearts Ease and Pat at My Tattered Elegance for more sneak peeks.
That's it for now, I'm taking my Nyquil and going to bed.
