When you can't create....SHOP!

Well my studio is under some major renovation right now & all of my supplies are packed away. So when you can't create what's the next best thing?? Junking!
I found some really cool things this weekend that bring to mind the old World War II quote;
Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.

I just fell in love with these sweet eye glasses. A piece of muslin is tied onto the ends to replace broken sides I assume. I can close my eyes & picture an old woman sitting in her chair by the fire mending socks. The glasses hanging on her neck until she needs them to thread her needle. Functional jewelry, right?!

I find it nearly impossible to pass up jars of sewing notions. My mom had an old sweets tin that held all of her do-dads.  I loved going through it as a child, looking for treasures. This jar was packed full & half off, so I didn't even hesistate.

I have a little ritual with treasure boxes like this. I don't examine it very well at the store, I save that pleasure for home. I dump it out on the table, sort it all into categories, buttons, scissors, thimbles.... One thing at a time. This jar had some awesome stuff. Several glass vials, 4 very old sewing scissors, 12 little thimbles in various colors & lots of pearl white buttons!

Love the threader, & the pins are so tiny.
Well, I'm off to scrape popcorn off ceilings....what fun!

Love your idea of not getting into the "treasure boxes" that you buy. I just love having my late mother-in-law's sewing basket and also button box. So many neat old buttons. Lots of khaki buttons too since my father-in-law was a farmer who wore khakis. If I was the creative type I could make a great picture frame with these buttons... or do lots of things. Someday...

I also can't pass up jars or tins of buttons and sewing notions. One time I found one full of old shoe buckles someone had saved after their shoes wore out!
Thanks for sharing, and hope your studio is up and running soon,
Melissa

Such wonderful treasures. I know you will make beautiful things with them. Going through your treasures when you get home reminds me of going through all your loot when you get home on Halloween. Such fun!

My grandmother made me a sewing box to keep at her house when I was little. She used a Whitman's chocolate box. I called it my treasure box. She gave it to me right before she passed. It is one of my favorite things!!!

The glasses are wonderful!!!

Enjoy!!!

what wonderful treasures you found! I finally after a year was able to go thru my Ita's (grandma) sewing machine drawer and found a lil bag full of stuff...I forgot all about it and just came across it again this weekend, I thought it was a long forgotten bag of goodies from my treasure hunts...well I was right...it was definately a treasure...it was all my Ita's sewing bits and pieces! She would save left over threads and wrap them around a piece of paper, cause you never knew when you might need just a lil piece of thread, she didn't believe in wasting...there were all kinds of buttons, even a piece of crayon and wax...a bunch of needles and lil balls of elastic and her thimble...But you know what the most amazing thing was? I had to hurry and put everything back into the bad and retie it with her lil piece of torn material...because everything smelled like her...I had to make sure I could hold on to that for as long as I could :) I felt like I was lil sitting there pushing on the treadle with my hands so that she could make my doll clothes :) goodness...was that a mouthful :) I think that was my BEST treasure box ever!
