canton stuff & re-do's

We had so much fun over spring break!
Spending four days camping in Texas hill country
is just what we needed!
Now that I'm caught up on the 4 garbage bags of dirty clothes we brought back, I thought I'd show you my Canton haul.
I feel like every time I go out buying I come home
 with the same stuff.
Are you sick of seeing it?
There's always a frame or 2.
Hopefully a little coin purse, & anything rusty.
But I see this stuff & my pulse quickens
I think to myself, those finials would make great bottle toppers.
And I realize I'll probably never use all of the crocheted & lace trims I've hoarded, but if it's sitting there on a table for a good price...... it's coming with me!
That hat was only a dollar so I bought it in honor of Karla, the high preistess of hats.
These long wool stockings were my lucky deal of the day.
I collect them,  & this pair was only $3!
And the secretary pin will appear on a collage soon one day.
 This book is so awesome!
It was cheap, I think because it had been in a flood.
Of course that just makes me want it more.
It's a ledger from Oklahoma dated 1800's.
I know... I have plenty of photographs, so I try to be picky.
The child on this one is precious.
It was only $2 & I love that it's from Paris, Texas.
At the end of the day I found this old booster seat.
It reminded me of being a kid at Denney's, so along with the rest it came home.
I did a little make-over on it with some drop cloth & lace.
I think it might sit on the bathroom floor with some magazines in the seat.??

This piece wasn't from Canton, but my neighborhood thrift.
I bought it a couple of weeks ago & finally finished it up.
Kevin & I sometimes disagree over the paint/no paint issue. Could it be I have finally burned him out on white?
But the reddish finish was not pretty & it had a lot of scratches.
I love beautiful wood, this just wasn't it.
Better I think.
I need your help here. Do you paint your hardware?
I've seen it both ways & always thought it was more about convenience than aesthetic.
One more thing before I sign off.

Look what I found at B&N yesterday!!!
I didn't think it was coming out until April 1, but there it was sitting right on the shelf!
I kind of wonder if it was a mistake,
has anyone else seen it out yet?
Last night when the kids were all tucked in, I crawled into bed & devoured it.
It's absolutely beautiful, hats off to Fifi & her crew!

My heart is beating so fast right now and I want to go home and tear into my stash and make something or maybe just go thrifting! zLove all your finds. I'd only paint the hardware if I really didn't like it.

What a wonderful re-do of the side board and booster seat - they both look amazing. And your haul is to die for! Those keyhole covers, the keys, the stockings...yummy! ANd do I paint my hardware? It depends on the original finish. Sometimes less is more so the less you do the more you like it!
Have a wonderful week Anji

Oh Lisa, we never get tired of seeing your goodies! we're addicted to that stuff, you know! Yes, I usually paint my hardward. just did on a piece. I like it, and think it adds more character to the piece usually. Especially if it has lots of crevices. yum.
I just received my book in the mail. early publication Amazon said. I've been studying mine too.

Hi Lisa,
I'm lovin your sweet little finds. I know you have a vision for each and every one. The transformation of the little chair is wonderful. I love your idea for it!
I like how your cabinet turned out.
Sometimes I paint the hardware and sometimes I don't. It just depends on how it looks on the piece.

I know you are staying busy creating wonderful things and I can't wait to see what's next.

big hugs,

Hi Lisa
Looks like you made a haul... all stuff I would have grabbed up. I know what you mean about always buying the same stuff... hardware, lace, silver etc... sometimes I wonder if I am stuck in a rut and just don't know it!
Glad to hear you had a little R & R after a long winter, at least your winter is over. It is still cold here and nothing up yet. My hubby is in Dallas this week and he calls me with the weather report, just to rub it in... 86 today. Man that bites.
Blessings to you Girlie

Well, Lisa girl, I drool over your fantastic finds! I can't believe you found such a wonderful hat for such a price. The wool stockings are beautiful too. I've never seen any like those before. Of course you couldn't pass on those lovely crocheted trims and the ledger. Such great treasures!
I love your sideboard makeover and to answer your question, I prefer the hardware to stay unpainted unless it is an shining gold tone.
Have a great day :-)!
Hugs to you,
Julia

Fabulous finds! Hopefully I can get out to Canton next month. We'll see. Where did you find the buffet? It reminds me so much of the one that sat in grandmother's living room.

June said...

I would have bought everything you brought home too Lisa. I think we would not shop well together. We would always be arm wrestling and miss out on all the really good deals. I just get a flush come over me when I see stuff like that at a market.(okay maybe it is a hot flash...but it still happens everytime I spy something lacy or rusty)
I love the redo on the chest. It turned out beautifully. If the hardware has an awesome patina, I don't paint, but if it is new or cheesy, I paint it the color of the piece.
I'm still thinking about the comment you got from Janet. WOW!
sending hugs

Lisa,
I am like you...I buy the same things over and over..all I have to say it probably is a good thing I DON"T live in Texas...you just have too much temptation there...our shops here do NOT look like that...You two have a blast, I bet...but I do wish I were close enough to join you now and then:)..as far as the hardware goes...I used to paint it or use glass knobs but am currently enjoying leaving it natural (if it is pretty and has an aged, dark look)...whatever you like...the piece is gorgeous, BTW!
Rene
Your words of support for me and my *mess* have encouraged me so much...THANK YOU for sharing your heart!

Love your Canton haul. When I lived in Dallas, I would go almost every 1st Monday weekend with my friend. I took my husband once and he took one look at the spread of booths and said "I have a notion to just turn the car around right now!" But I think even he enjoyed it after all. Can't wait to see what you'll do with them!

Now on to the knobs and handle issue. It looks so beautiful now, why tamper? Seriously, you did a major makeover and now it looks good enough for Sundance Catalog.

I really really love your art dear girl! Happiest of Blessings ~ Katie
